The show’s story and ’70s-inflected rock songs are by Ayers, who is backed by an excellent five-piece band (the members of which also take on small characters throughout). Allison Narver directs with warmth and specificity. A story told with such love, compassion and self-awareness is a beautiful thing … it’s to [Ayers’] (and Narver’s) credit that they don’t seem to seek any narrative tidiness besides: This is all really hard and complicated. …the power and vulnerability of this story, and the tenderness with which it permeates the Erickson Theatre, are undeniable. And that’s a gift that Ayers and Graham have shared with us, because nearly 40 years on, their song remains the same. And it rocks.
